Vaginal Yeast infections Can Create Real Problems

To begin with to really get a handle on what vaginal yeast infections are it helps to understand what is referred to as the Yeast.  Yeast is basically a fungus and is medically known as Candida. There are various forms of Candida and there is one particular one that is commonly known to cause vaginal yeast infections.

Vaginal yeast infections are not something that is uncommon for women. As a matter of fact, many women will get them, and it's probably the minority that do not. There are many women that have the yeast present in the vaginal area, but it never creates any problems or leads to any type of infection. This yeast can remain in the vaginal area for many years with no problem and never creates vaginal yeast infections.

The problem comes when new yeast appears and the body is not used to it. Alternatively, there can be a sudden overgrowth of the yeast that is already there. Which is still the normal yeast but now becoming too much of it.

Quite often women have found that when they have used antibiotics for other illnesses that this is followed up with vaginal yeast infections. This is because the yeast has been affected by the antibiotic and is out of balance. Another issue that can create a vaginal yeast infection is if there has been an injury to the vaginal tissue. Quite often individuals that take chemotherapy will have this problem because of the effect of the chemo drugs.
Another culprit causing  vaginal yeast infections is the cortisone related medications a prime example is prednisone.

It is an important to know at least for the first time out that you definitely have a vaginal yeast infection, and that it is not an underlying symptom of something else going on in your body. For example, diabetes has been known to increase vaginal  yeast infections and often women that are pregnant will develop them as well. They have become common with women that take birth control pills as well. Another problem that can create this is using some  types of douches that are out on the market that are perfumed or the vaginal sprays. Anything that is going to upset the balance of the yeast is going to lead to a risk of vaginal yeast infections forming.

There is often a stigma attached to vaginal yeast infections. Where some people feel that it is a hygiene problem  created from poor hygiene habits. This most often is  not the case. Another fallacy is that vaginal yeast infections are sexually transmitted. This is believed to be a fallacy also although it does occur occasionally . It has also been knowing that men will develop at times a irritation from having sexual intercourse with a woman that suffers from vaginal yeast infections.

Once it's been established that the problem is vaginal yeast infections it  has to be treated. Many women will do one of three things such they will either see their doctor and get a prescriptive medicine for the vaginal yeast infections which would be in the anti-fungal line. Then they may resort to one of the many treatments of  over-the-counter medications that women can take advantage of as well. Finally more women are starting to look for more natural type treatments and many are turning to the yogurt treatment as a form of correction.
